Flower Crafts

The other day, I had a very busy schedule and did not have time to prepare adequately for my session with an Alzheimer's patient. We conduct occupational therapy and art therapy activities in an effort to produce creative work and exercise the mind. But after days and days of drawing and crafts, I momentarily found myself out of ideas.
Lets be honest here. When the sessions are mainly covered by some kind of crafting, coming up every day with new innovative ideas is not easy.
But there is an easy way out of it, and that is creating flower crafts. Easy and nice theme, which allows for the discussion to be lead in a variety of directions, really easy to conduct and can be done with a variety of different ways, thus provide a new activity each time.

Flowers can be crafted with different papers:

  • fold a thin paper in three parts and draw a petal on them
  • cut so as for the paper to remain connected
  • cut a paper roundly shaped
  • glue the petals first on a paper, then the circle in the middle
  • decorate more with craft straws

Flowers can be made with craft materials:

  • cut the petals (similarly as above)
  • glue them on a wooden craft stick
  • add a plastic leaf and a craft- cotton

Flowers can be painted and made into a frame:

  • dip a round craft- cotton into fingerpaint and place it five consequent times on the paper, so as to create a circle
  • glue around the paper wooden craft- sticks, in order to create a frame
  • decorate further with plastic petals

Despite that these activities are similar to each other, they provide a quite different outcome. Few and similar materials were used and the flowers were easy to make. Enjoyable every time!

Note: The current activity was conducted in an individual level in the sphere of creative work and cognitive reinforcement in a specific elderly care unit in Athens.
