Texture Squares

How to make them:
  1. Cut a square from a thick paper
  2. Draw on it the shape (in which the texture will be placed)
  3. Colour it
  4. Then glue the material of choice inside the drawn shape (that of a hand is helpful and easy to explore)
  5. Give it some time to dry and... it is ready!

Why make them:
  • Texture Squares stimulate the senses:
    • mostly the sense of touch, by allowing to explore how differently each material feels
    • but also vision, through the bright and mixed colours
  • Stimulating the senses can be an important activity exercising the neurological functioning of a person and their (fine) motor skills, as well as attention.

Who to make them for:
  • Children with ADHD
    • the squares can provide the diverse and alternating stimulation they need, while focusing their attention to a specific task
  • Individuals with dementia, and neurodegenerative disorders
    • their senses, which are in decline, are exercised and maintained up to a functional level
  • Individuals with severe brain damage (or injury):
    • they have lost many cognitive abilities, and perhaps their basic senses are the only ones that can stimulate them, and promote an interaction with the world in general

How to use them:
  • With kids:
    • A game: touch and explore- place your hand on the texture square and through exploring try to guess what is the material constituting it.
  • With adults with dementia:
    • A game: touch and try to describe verbaly what it feels like (for example soft, rough, squeeky)- if the disorder is in a progressed stage, then focus on simple categories (soft vs hard)
  • With adults with brain disfunction:
    • An exercise: touch and try to feel the different materials, explore them, and try (with our help) to recognize that there is a difference among them (one feels differently from another)

It is an activity of essentials, that can lead to lots of fun with more functional individuals, but can also provide a link between a person with severe brain deficits and the environment around him/ her- fact which is important since there are few things that can be done therapeutically in these cases.
