Anti-stress Ball

Materials:
  • A balloon
  • Some sand/small stones/rice/ flour
  • A measuring cone

Process:
Could not be more simple. Fit the cone in the top open edge of the balloon and slowly place the filling material inside until it is full and has a squeeky, stretchy shape. Tie a knot in the end when finished.

Benefits:

An antistress ball is a nice and easy activity to conduct, but more importantly it can be really helpful!
It can be used for its antistress effect by individuals who struggle with anxiety or anger issues.
But more importantly it can be used for its sensory stimulation effect. Specifically, the pushing and pulling of the ball-the feeling that this causes to the hands, can be very helpful. On the one hand it can be used by children or adults with ADHD since it will provide them with the sensory excitement they seek, thus allowing them to focus their attention on specific tasks. On the other hand, it can be used by elderly with neurodegenerative disorders, such as dementia, where as nerve function is being diminished, their senses grow week, thus need all the stimulation they can get. Finally and more importantly, they can be used by individuals with severe brain deficits, such as brain infections. These individuals have lost most of their functions, with only the basic remaining, in the best cases, thus any type of activity, stimulation of interaction is difficult to say the least. An antistress ball may allow for stimulation of the hands, something very hard for them to do. It may awaken the senses and therefore the brain- even a little bit.
For example it was used by an individual whose brain damage is so severe that he has lost function of most of his body including his right arm. He held the antistress ball with the left hand, and struggled to squeeze it and change its shape. Once he did, he moved his fingers around it, exploring the sentiment further, with a look of curiosity. He did that for some time, which was the maximum stimulation he had in a while.

Create it. Explore it.
